Well, the spring tying is done. It's not a perfect job, but hopefully it will work. Let me know what the next step should be.

Beginner
by Vicky
(Louisiana)
I am going to recover a chaise. This is my first attempt. My grandparents had an upholstery shop back in the 50s before i was born. They retired before I was old enough to comprehend what they were doing. Recently I gave my son a chaise. It is very simply done and not fancy at all. He purchased a home down the street from me. He is 25, single and his furniture consists of hand me downs. I did not consider "the durability factor" when I chose the fabric for it when i purchased it several years ago, only the color and pattern. The fabric on the seat had begun to thin prior to my passing it down, so I was not surprised to see a big hole in it on a recent visit. I work part time as a registered nurse but my passion is fixing things that are broken. I thought hmmm I think I am going to take this on. I rescued it and now it sits in my project room waiting for me to figure out what to do with it. I surely cannot hurt it, it is not an herloom. It is not that old, seems to be in good structual shape. I am sure that it is not as well made as the pieces my grandparents worked on. I think maybe it is in the midrange. A perfect "first upholstery project". It has no buttons, very little sewing. I have researched, bought books and some supplies. I am taking pictures as I go. I think maybe if could replicate what is there and record every step I take in removing the cover, I might be able to get it back together. Any suggestions for a beginner. I am removing the bottom dust cover I have the back cloth almost off. I have made marks to help me put the new fabric. I just think maybe I should add some batting in places that doesn't seem to have it. Enough of my rambling. I will send pictures if you are interested in giving me any pointers. Thank you so much, Vicky

Cindi's Project #2
by Cindi
(California)
Hi again, I'm emailing again because I'm not entirely clear on how to respond on the website. Should I post a comment or a new entry and how do I attach additional photos? Are we ready for this???? I removed the padding and burlap as you suggested. The springs on the back need some work as you'll see in the picture. There was not any webbing anywhere on the chair. Let me know what you think and if you need more photos. I know this is a big project so if you don't have time to help me I'll understand........however, I'm ready to learn! Thanks again, Cindi (California)

Attaching back panel to ladder back chair
by Edie
(Atlanta, GA)
I have been working on a ladder back chair with a seat and back pad. The back panel was originally attached by nails, which were nailed from front to back but could not be seen from the front. How is this accomplished?

elbow rest area of a bar
I was wondering if anyone has replaced the elbow rest of a bar. If so, I would love to know what worked for you. Would also like to know anything else that would help. Did working from under the bar to the top work best or the opposite? Thank you. Susan

horsehair & burlap chair seat
by Terry
(California)
Need to remove the needlepoint cover and re-upholster an old violin back chair. Under the cotton batting there is horsehair and burlap (or some type of straw-like webbing). Should I remove all and start over? Or can I keep the burlap which seems to form the support?

Chair Recovery Questions
by Cindi
Chair
Here is my upholstery question.. Any assistance would be appreciated greatly! I watched your video. It was very informative. Do you have any more on upholstery? The chair I am attempting to recover has coiled springs on the seat and also on the back. The arms and the back are padded with wood shavings (at least that is what I'm calling them) and layers of cotton over burlap covered springs. What should I use to replace the padding. If I use foam on the arms should I use anything in addition to it? Also, the back is kind of molded over the springs with wood shavings and layers of cotton which leads me to my next question. What would work best to replace the back padding. Also, is there a website you would recommend to purchase upholstery supplies as our fabric store carries very little for the DIY upholsterer. I have attached a picture of my chair. It's pretty pitiful looking. :( Any help will be appreciated! Thank you, Cindi

re-upholstering a pull-out sofa
by ARLENE
(CARIBBEAN)
In my small apartment, I sleep on a pull-out sofa. I've had it for years and PAID to have it re-upholstered last year. IT WAS VERY POORLY DONE.Within a month of use it began to come apart at the seams...literally. I've decided to try and re-do it myself using your videos; because if something has to be poorly done, I may as well be the one to do it...FOR FREE.And who knows, I may do a better than okay job!Hopefully, I can't do worse than what was already done.
