Healthy Hair Care Tips!

Hair care is a vital parameter of external beauty. Everybody is concerned about its appearance. A number of factors such as age, diet, season, climate, pollution, stress and anxiety affect the health of your hair and scalp. An important factor is how you wash your hair. Here are some pointers in hair care to keep your hair looking great and healthy.

1. Shampooing: It is not recommended to wash hair twice in succession, as is often recommended by shampoo manufacturers. The first shampoo will wash your hair and the second will strip your hair of vital nutrients and over dry your hair. Use mild shampoos if you want to wash often (they create fewer bubbles, excess suds are more aggressive). Use anti-dandruff shampoos with care, they can make hair less lively, irritate the scalp, and can actually increase the production of dandruff.

2. Rinsing: A long rinsing with water is a good hair care tip, even if you are in a hurry. If not rinsed properly, the hair becomes dull and more sensitive to external irritants such as pollution. Use cold water as a final rinse, it will make your hair shinier. The cold water closes the scales that the hair has on its surface, which open when washed with hot water. Moreover, if your scalp tends to be greasy, cold water moderates sebum production.

3. Brushing: Strength of hair comes from the root. Brushing doesn't give it more strength but can increase the creation of split ends. Brushing may also distribute the oils produced by the scalp throughout the hair, effectively acting as a natural conditioner and preventing oil buildup on the scalp. Be sure to use a brush with natural bristles, and never brush wet hair. The old notion, 100 brush strokes a day in hair care produces beautiful hair, is false. Too much brushing may injure the hair.

4. Playing sports: Physical exertion increases perspiration, helping the removal of waste products from the skin that may accumulate near the roots of hair on the scalp. Be sure to give your hair extra care by rinsing thoroughly after exercise to completely remove.

5. Hair sprays: When applied properly, most hair sprays will not harm the hair. Excessive use or failure to shampoo, however, can cause it to become dull.

6. Wigs: Normal wig wearing is not injurious to the hair provided the wig is not too tight. More shampooing may become necessary because wigs increase scalp perspiration.

7. Hair Dryers: Hair dryers should be used at low heat to keep hair from splitting. High heat can also cause damage to hair.

8. Dyeing: Dyeing of the hair can cause hair loss. Although the products do not attack the root of the hair, they are aggressive and can harm the hair. Use special hair care products to protect.

9. Cutting: Although trimming may beautify hair by removing damaged or split ends, cutting does not promote faster growth. Hair grows at the same rate regardless, and the rate is largely a matter of heredity. If you have split ends, the only hair care solution is to cut it and use a hydrating treatment to protect the new ends.

10. Braiding: Tight or frequent braiding may pull at the hair roots and cause damage. Rubber bands or tight clips should also be avoided to maintain a healthy hair care routine.

Healthy Hair Secrets

TheHairStyler.com Hair Feature
By Katie Summers, THS Consultant

Ever wondered why some people have luscious hair that is shiny and never looks out of place, and why you don't? A healthy hair makeover is surprisingly not too hard to achieve. All you need to do is learn a few healthy hair secrets and try a little home maintenance.

Great Hair Starts With a Good Cut
A professional haircut will ensure that your hair is free from damaged and spit ends and will make your hair look healthy. Seeing a professional will also give you the opportunity to get the right cut for your hair type and texture. Follow up visits which include regular trims will also guarantee that your hair will look and feel its best.

Healthy Hair Is Hydrated Hair
Drink plenty of water. Water not only hydrates your skin and body, it also hydrates your hair.

Product Overload
Don't use too many products. Product overload will weigh your hair down and make it look tired and greasy. Remember this rule: One product to style and one product to finish with.

Heat Styler Hazard
If you use a heat styler such as a hair-dryer, straightener or curling iron, then make sure to apply a heat protection product first. Heated stylers can zap your hair of moisture and leave your strands frizzy and hard to manage.

Sleeping Beauty
When you are sleeping your body is working its hardest to repair damage, including any hair damage, so plenty of sleep is a must. To further help your hair achieve its healthy best, try sleeping on a satin pillowcase. This will stop your hair from rubbing as you sleep and will control fly-aways.

Moisture Madness
Try an intensive conditioner once a week to keep your locks moisturized and to keep your hair soft. To get the best from your deep treatment, apply it to your hair then cover with plastic wrap or a plastic shower cap and leave for ten minutes before rinsing out. This will add heat and allow the treatment to penetrate. For a deeper condition, wrap a warm towel over the plastic wrap.

Product Placement
Choose the right products for your hair. If you've styled with the right products for your hair type and washed with the right shampoo then your hair should be naturally shiny and manageable. If it's not, see your stylist and get an expert opinion on what will work best for your hair.

Balanced Eating
Eating a well-balanced diet which is full of healthy proteins and lots of vitamins will keep your hair glowing. Not to mention your skin and your waistline!

Hair Care - Understanding How It Grows

The hair system is known the pilosebaceous system.

It consists of four main parts:

1. Follicle - the hair canal 2. Papilla - the organ that feeds hair growth 3. Sebaceous Gland - the associated oil gland 4. Hair - shaft or structure which has hardened (keratinized)

Follicle A hair follicle is an indention in the skin.

The inside of each follicle therefore is much like the skin's surface being an inward fold into the skin with a mechanism for producing a hair.

The lower portion of the follicle has an expanded shape and is called the follicle bulb where there is an area of actively dividing cells called the hair matrix.

This is the source of hair production. The follicle and the hair it produces continue through repeated cycles of growth and rest.

Papilla At the base of the follicle lies a tiny structure made of skin- related cells called the dermal papilla which feeds the newly formed hair cells from its blood supply.

These newly formed hair cells grow continuously and die continuously, forming a hardened or keratinized structure - the hair shaft.

The hair shaft continues to grow outward from the follicle base.

Sebaceous Gland The sebaceous glands or oil glands are located close beneath the surface of the skin over the entire body.

There are a large number concentrated in the facial area. The oily material secreted is called sebum.

Sebum lubricates the hair shaft and the skin.

Hair The papillary region is often referred to as the "hair root," the portion which grows below the surface of the skin which is contained within the follicle canal.

The hair shaft is the portion of the hair that grows above the skin surface.

Generally speaking, two types of hair are produced by the follicle:

vellus terminal

Vellus hair is like "peach fuzz" and it is normally found on a woman's cheek or a young child. It is soft, downy and colorless. The follicles producing vellus hair are shallow, and the hair shaft produced is relatively short. Vellus hair is normal in women and is not treated with permanent hair removal techniques such as electrolysis.

Terminal hair is deeply rooted, coarse, and colored. Terminal hair begins as the peach fuzz type but later develops color and some degree of coarseness at which point it becomes the terminal type.

Terminal hair grows from the scalp, eyebrows, underarms, pubic area, and other parts of the body.

It is terminal hair which many people regard as unwanted and therefore try to remove from certain body areas.

Recommendation: Nisim International, leaders in hair science for over twenty years, have developed products to handle all hair care problems, including removing unwanted body hair, speeding up head hair growth, stopping hair loss, and eliminating ingrown hair. Click here for details: Hair Care

Face Shapes To Suit Hairstyles

TheHairStyler.com Hair Feature
By Paola Fioramonte, THS Hair Consultant

When changing to a fabulous new look, believe it or not, it's the shape of your face, along with your hair type and texture, that is the most important factor to consider. Here at TheHairStyler.com, we've come up with an easy to follow guide that will help you determine your face shape and advise you on the best cuts for a fantastic new look.

Face Shape

To determine your face shape, take a tape measure or ruler and record the following:

1. The measurement of your face across the top of your cheekbones.
2. The measurement across your jawline from the widest point to the widest point.
3. The measurement across your forehead at the widest point (generally somewhere halfway between your eyebrows and your hairline).
4. The measurement from the tip of your hairline to the bottom of your chin.

You are now ready to see which one of the seven classic face shapes belongs to you!

Oval
Egg Shaped With A Forehead And Jaw That Are The Same Width
The ideal face shape, because it is proportionally balanced.

Styles to try: an oval face will suit any hairstyle be it straight, wavy, curly, short, medium or long.

Styles to avoid: try to avoid wearing your hairstyle on your face as you'll lose the shape behind the hair and may also add the appearance of weight to your face.

Oval faced celebrity: Jennifer Aniston

Round
Circular Shaped
The best way to flatter a round face is to create an oval appearance which will lift your facial features.

Styles to try: a below the chin haircut that keeps the sides close to your face and promotes height at the crown is a great style. Hairstyles that are longer than chin length will also suit, and by layering the top to achieve fullness, and keeping the cut relatively close to the face, your face shape will appear longer and narrower. Styles that include short fringes will also add length to your face.

Styles to avoid: curly styles emphasize roundness and should be avoided as well as very long styles and ones that pull back tight off your face.

Round faced celebrity: Drew Barrymore

Oblong
The Face Is Longer Than It Is Wide
Oblong faces have high foreheads and long chins and require haircuts that add width and volume.

Styles to try: haircuts that will mostly suit are anything that is short to medium length, such as the "Wedge" style.

Styles to avoid: too much hair length will make an oblong face look even longer. We suggest that you keep your hair above shoulder length and if possible, avoid styles with no fringe.

Oblong faced celebrity: Janet Jackson

Heart
Wide At The Forehead, Narrowing To A Point At The Jawline
The objective is to create width around your narrow chin.

Styles to try: soft and curly chin-length hairstyles would suit best. A chin length bob is a great style that creates a balanced look by giving fullness and balance where you need it.

Styles to avoid: try to avoid short, full hairstyles like slicked back looks that emphasize your upper face.

Heart faced celebrity: Naomi Campbell

Square
A Strong Forehead And Jawline
The square face is angular with a broad, square forehead. The objective is to create an oval appearance and lift your facial features.

Styles to try: short to medium length hairstyles, especially with wave or roundness around the face, will suit you best. Soften the edges of your face with layers and wear long hair at, or past your shoulders. Your hair would look best parted down one side with a swept away fringe to create a different angle. If your hair is straight, you may want to consider a body wave to achieve a nice balance to the straight features of this face shape.

Styles to avoid: a square geometric cut, long bobs with heavy fringes, and all styles that part down the middle.

Square shaped celebrity: Sandra Bullock

Diamond
The Forehead And Jawline Is Narrow With Wide Cheekbones
The key is to find a hairstyle that will balance the narrow chin.

Styles to try: most hairstyles suit a diamond shape with the best being a full, rounded style such as a graduated bob which falls to the chin.

Styles to avoid: avoid all hairstyles that leave your forehead completely exposed and styles where there is no hair on your neck.

Diamond shaped celebrity: Sophia Loren

Triangular
The Forehead And Cheekbones Are Narrow With A Wide Jawline
The objective is to narrow your chin and widen your forehead.

Styles to try: shorter hairstyles that balance the prominent jawline would suit, with lots of layers added to achieve fullness and to balance the upper part of your face. Hairstyles that are full at the temples like the "Wedge" style will look great.

Styles to avoid: long, full hairstyles that draw attention to the jawline and styles that add width, such as haircuts that kick out at the bottom.

Triangular faced celebrity: Stevie Wonder
