Recovery Upholstery

The materials used to stuff and cover chairs, couches and similar furniture are referred to as upholstery. There are various varieties of material like foam and cotton padding, vinyl and leather that can be used in upholstery.

Upholstery can also be used for a wingback chair. Wingback chairs normally bring back older memories and these days a wingback chair is not only expensive but it is very difficult to find one in today’s market. So, instead of buying a wingback chair one can reupholster an older wingback chair instead and save some money. It's also easier than having to find a new chair as well.

Following these steps can be helpful in upholstering a wingback chair:

The old fabric must be removed from the chair. The old staples can be removed by using a flat head screwdriver and it can be done by flipping the chair upside down. After that the fabric should be removed from the chair and in order to separate the pieces, a seam ripper can be used. These pieces can then be used as a template for the new fabric.

The new fabric should be laid facing downwards on the floor. The old pieces should be placed on top- face down. These old pieces should be pinned down with the new fabric by using sewing pins. A template can be created by using an electric scissor to cut around each piece. The electric scissors work very efficiently on upholstery fabrics as they help in keeping the cut in a straight line. A fabric marker should be used to mark the new pieces on the back. This is done in order to know where they are to be placed on the chair.

The sewing pins from the newly cut pieces of fabric should be removed and kept aside. The pieces marked for the arms should be placed onto the chair. Each arm piece should be stapled from the inside of the chair back and from the outside of the chair arm. One can place a line of staples underneath the arm. After that, the wing pieces should be placed and stapled along the edges.

In the next step, the piece marked for the front of the chair should be placed. The piece should be flipped in such a way that it falls over the back of the chair. Along the top edge of the chair, a line of staples should be placed. After that, flip it back over and push it down inside the bottom of the chair. In order to hold the fabric in place, a line of staples should be placed along the edges which are tucked.

Now place the fabric which is marked for the back at its proper position. After flipping the piece up and over the chair’s front, it should be stapled along the top edge over the top of the front piece of fabric. After that the piece should be flipped back over and should be stapled along the sides. Staple the front bottom edge by turning the chair upright and use the same method used for the back.

The top and the bottom pieces can be sewed together by usingsewing machine in order to make a cushion. The pieces should be pinned together with sewing pins and by making right sides together. A 5/8 inch seam can be used to sew along the pinned edge. Pins should be removed afterward. The cushion should be turned right side out so that foam can be placed inside. The opening on the back should be closed by hand-stitching it.
