Upholstery Spring Tie Page 1
Well, we're ready to move onto the next process in our Reupholstery project. Let's see what Craig is up to now! The next step is to put the new webbing onto the stripped frame.
First, find the center of the frame. The webbing is placed 3/4 inch apart working from the center outward. Make sure it is evenly spaced apart. Do front to back first and then interveave from side to side. This gives added support to the seat since it is the most used area. The reason for the webbing to be precise and straight is you use the webbing as a guide to put the springs in straight.
Picture 1 shows the webbing folded and stapled at the edge. Every edge must be folded and stapled or it will pull loose because the webbing will ravel.

Picture 2 shows a tool called the webbing stretcher. This tool allows you to pull the webbing tight and hold it in place.

Picture 3 shows how the webbing should look when done.

Picture 4 shows the next step which is to insert the springs.

Each spring should have a knot. Some of the cheaper spings are not knotted and may be harder to use for the novice. The knot side of the spring is the weaker side and considered to be the back of the spring.
When setting the springs, the first two rows you face the knot towards the back of the seat. The back row you face the knot to the front of the seat. Place the springs in straight from front to back
Evenly space them in the seat to fill the void. Then when tied they will stand straight up and down. Attach the springs to the webbing by hand sewing with heavy nylon thread.
Next, an edge wire needs to be attached in a rectangle shape all the way around the seat area. Be sure to use edge wire that is 1/8 inch steel. Attach the edge wire with clip pliers and clips.
